Searching for The Sound of Music in Salzburg!

I remember back in May when momma and I were shopping for travel-size things in Target...I saw a clip of the Sound of Music playing on a TV in the DVD section...I got so excited at the thought that I would be in Austria in just a few days!!! Just think how excited I was to actually be in Salzburg where a lot of the Sound of Music was filmed! And where the real story took place!

"Mozarts Birth-house/Mozart Museum/In this house was W.A.Mozart on the 22 of January born." There's a literal translation for ya...This is one thing about German that gets me in conversation. The verb coming at the end of the sentence is confusing!

Cafe Tomaselli--Mozart drank his Melange (I had some, it was good! just basic coffee latte)  here and composed some of his works.

Pretzels for lunch!!! yummm

This is the church where Georg and Maria got married in the movie. I think they may have gotten married here in real life too, about a decade before they left Austria for America.

Salzburg from the big mountain with the fortress on top, seen in an above picture.

Puppet museum in the fortress!
Austrians appreciate their puppet theaters. I honestly find them a bit creepy.

Nonnberg = nun mountain. The convent featured in the movie was just down the hill from the big fortress. Everything except this church (kirche) is private and not open to tourists.

This was a display board outside the church. It reminded me of those silly nun calendars. Also, I think it is interesting that they refer to God with the informal "du" instead of the formal "Sie".

Catacombs!

A graveyard. I think it inspired the one in the movie, but I don't think the part was actually filmed here.
Inside the catacombs. It was pretty much a cave with a couple of alters. No skeletons or anything.

The theater!!! If you have seen the Sound of Music, then you recognize this! I actually just happened to walk in through stage right where the contestants in the movie did. The real Van Trapp family did actually perform here, but they did not rush away in secret like as presented in the movie. They merely told people they would be traveling to America to perform, which they did, and they just didn't return to Austria. The theater is pretty neat. The back wall of arches is flush with the mountain cliff face (like is seen in the catacomb picture). There were trees and bushes growing where Nazis stood in the movie.
